Lecturers Delve into Richmond’s Artistic and Cultural History
The Decorative Arts Trust’s Fall 2022 Symposium in Richmond, VA, will not be soon forgotten, particularly because we recorded the presentations of our six esteemed lecturers! Since the Symposium sold out quickly, sharing these videos allows members who were not able to attend an opportunity to enjoy and learn from the insights provided by these superb experts.
On Friday evening, the Symposium kicked off in The Jefferson Hotel’s Empire Room with two Jonathan L. Fairbanks Lectures. Calder Loth, Retired Senior Architectural Historian for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, presented Richmond: An Architectural Foretaste.
Made Along the James: The Decorative Arts of Eastern Virginia was presented by Ronald L. Hurst, Senior Vice President for Museums, Preservation & Historic Resources and The Carlisle H. Humelsine Chief Curator at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
After a few days of taking in Richmond’s architecture, decorative arts, and history, we gathered in The Jefferson Hotel’s Grand Ballroom to learn from four more presentations.
Christina K. Vida, Elise H. Wright Curator of General Collections at The Valentine Museum, spoke about Edward Valentine’s Sculpture Studio and Lost Cause Power Play.
The John A.H. Sweeney Emerging Scholar Lecture was From Northern Imports to Local Manufacture: Clockmaking in Richmond, presented by Rachel Asbury Cole, Collections Project Manager and Registrar at The Valentine Museum.
Ceramics in America Editor Robert Hunter lectured about The Art, History, and Mystery of Richmond Stoneware.
Elyse Gerstenecker, Curator of Historical Collections at The Telfair Museum, presented the Marie Zimmermann Emerging Scholar Lecture about George’s Grimace: Political Frustrations on a Virginia Stoneware Jar.
