Katrina Reynolds and Ethan Snyder Lecture at 2022 Delaware Antiques Show
The Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library’s 2022 Delaware Antiques Show opens tonight, and the Decorative Arts Trust was proud to once again sponsor two young scholar lectures.
On Saturday, November 12, Katrina Reynolds and Ethan Snyder, both Lois F. McNeill Fellows in the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture, take the stage to share recent research with fellow decorative arts enthusiasts.
Katrina discusses a unique cape-like collar in Winterthur’s collection in her lecture Rediscovering the Formula: Interpreting a Stenciled Pelerine in the Winterthur Collection. Two centuries after its creation, the mysterious garment continues to confound experts, stretching how we understand 19th-century fashion, craft, and identity. Through historical and scientific analysis, Katrina investigates how material culture scholars can rediscover and interpret the hands, minds, and “formulas” behind the textile’s creation.
Katrina received her B.A. in History of Art and History along with a minor in Journalism from UC Berkeley in 2019, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and with high distinction.
Ethan’s lecture, A Long Space Race: Contextualizing Early (Human) Flight in 18th-Century Material Culture, explores the presentation of human hopes and fears through a plate that depicts Vincenzo Lunardi’s ballooning. He investigated the burgeoning global network of 18th-century capitalism, the space race of the Cold War, and the current billionaire space race, as well as issues of individualism, climate, and the future of humanity.
Ethan is a graduate of Kenyon College and has been involved in collections, archives, and visitor services at the Wharton Esherick Museum.
