For this month’s virtual tour, Ralph will take us to one of the South’s most ambitious Baroque houses. The grand home was built in the 1730s on an escarpment overlooking the river in the distance during the experimental period between the bold Baroque and staid Georgian. Still owned by descendants of the original builder, it is full of decorative arts from many generations and has one of our best-preserved colonial gardens. There will be much discussion of the sparkling brickwork, Gibbsian stone trim, and architectural details from the Palladio Londoninensis. A first edition of this rare pattern book will be featured as well.
