Join us online for a highlight from our Symposium in Salem, a tour of Castle Hill on the Crane Estate with Susan Hill Dolan, Curator of Ipswich Properties for the Trustees of Reservations. On September 30 at 1:00 pm, Susan will share this National Historic Landmark that lies amidst 2,100 acres of protected shoreline and saltmarsh. A Country Place Era estate, Castle Hill was once the summer home of plumbing magnate Richard Teller Crane, Jr., heir to Crane Co. of Chicago, and his family. The Cranes hired some of the most renowned architects, landscape architects, and artists of the era to design the house and grounds, including David Adler, Arthur Shurcliff, and the Olmsted Brothers. You won’t want to miss the Baroque overmantel carvings by Grinling Gibbons in the Library, ornamental woodwork from a 1732 London townhouse, Chinese export wallpaper, and state-of-the-art Crane bathrooms, all integrated with elegance, comfort, and taste.
The Decorative Arts Trust hosts monthly virtual tours that give viewers the opportunity to go behind the scenes and experience incredible collections and sites. Curators, collectors, and lovers of decorative arts share fascinating objects and interiors through our tours hosted on YouTube Live.
