Save the Date: Spring Study Trip Abroad 2018
April 3-11, 2018
Building upon recent Study Trips Abroad in Yorkshire and Scotland, this tour will offer an in-depth look at the heralded career of English furniture maker Thomas Chippendale, focusing on the most important collections of his work as well as special exhibitions planned in conjunction with the cabinetmaker’s 300th birthday. Organized by Trust Governor Brock Jobe, Emeritus Professor of Decorative Arts at Winterthur Museum, the program includes robust explorations of documented Chippendale furniture at Nostell Priory, Newby Hall, Harewood House, Burton Constable and Temple Newsam in Yorkshire as well as Paxton House and Dumfries House in Scotland. Renowned English furniture historians Adam Bowett and James Lomax will provide unparalleled access to the collections in Yorkshire, with their equally heralded Scottish counterpart David Jones introducing the Scottish sites. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend a pre-program tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on April 3. The Met is preparing an exhibition on Chippendale furniture and the Museum’s extensive collection of drawings by the cabinetmaker.
Registration to open spring 2017.
