Journeys in Blue and Gold: A Century of Interpreting Whistler’s Peacock Room
Join us to view James McNeill Whistler’s dazzling masterpiece, the Peacock Room, Whistler’s extravagant interior and the epitome of Gilded Age grandeur. Originally this was the dining room of his London patron, shipping magnate Frederick Leyland. You’ll hear the fascinating story about the creation of the Peacock Room and Whistler’s contentious relationship with Leyland and the room’s subsequent move from London to Detroit before finding its ultimate home in Freer’s purpose-built museum on the National Mall. For Freer, the room embodied his belief that “all works of art go together, whatever their period.”
