Amelia Peck, The Met’s Marica F. Vileck Curator for American Decorative Arts, reflects on the powerful 2022 collaboration between The Met’s Costume Institute and the American Wing for their exhibit, In America: An Anthology of Fashion. In that partnership, sartorial narratives highlighted the sometimes hidden histories in American period rooms. In those rooms, men’s and women’s dress were presented in a series of vignettes, “freeze frames”, if you will, that told a variety of stories and explored the role of dress in shaping the American identity and adding a nuanced and layered perspective to the period rooms.
