Studio Sessions: Block Printing on Fabric
Join us for a workshop exploring ways of creating patterns through block printing on fabric, inspired by “Patterns in Abstraction: Black Quilts from the High’s Collection.” This workshop will begin with a short visit to the exhibition to investigate the elements of art and principles of design, finding inspiration in repetitive patterns and textile materials. We will consider the use of color, shape, and pattern arrangements in quilts to make our own designs. Afterward, we will work independently in the studio to explore the unique technique of block printing and stamping on fabric, using pattern as a vehicle for storytelling by abstracting forms, colors, and textures from objects and environments around us. We will learn safe carving techniques and the processes of inking and printing objects. In the end, each participant will have their own design and series of prints. Materials will be provided, and we invite you to bring found objects to create interesting impressions on paper and fabric or reference photos of patterns you encounter in daily life for inspiration.
