In this in-person class with Kathryn Polletto of Kennebunk Basketry, participants will make a Market Basket, a very functional basket for carrying various items. This basket measures 6″ x 12″ x 5 1/2″, when completed, with an Oak handle that measures 6″x 10″. The basket is made with various widths of reed splint and five strands of hand-dyed reed will be added for some color and pattern.

The participant will learn the first steps of making a rectangular basket with a closed bottom. The participant will learn how to weave up the sides, finish off the top, and lash on a rim.

Level: This basket is good for beginners or for those who have some knowledge of basket weaving.

Students will bring from home:
-Basin or Bucket for water
-yard stick or tape measure
-heavy scissors
-pencil
-spray bottle
-awl or knitting needle
-spring clothespins
-small towel

All basket reeds and materials will be supplied.

Class size: Minimum 5, Maximum 8

Kathy Polletto has been weaving baskets for over 40 years. She began weaving because she was very interested in 18th century history and she admired how utilitarian, everyday items were handmade with such skill. Basket making particularly intrigued her as she enjoyed working with natural fibers such as plant and wood-based materials. She is essentially self-taught. She learned by reading books, as well as by visiting historical sites and craft fairs to observe other craftsmen weaving. Eventually, she joined High Country Basketry Guild in Virginia. There she was able to learn other techniques working with other basket weavers. Kathy has a Facebook page and Instagram page under Kennebunk Basketry. She sells her baskets at Shaker Village.
