The Legacy of Vesuvius: Bourbon Discoveries on the Bay of Naples
Meadows Museum gallery talks feature art research and perspectives from local guest speakers. Today’s presenters are P. Gregory Warden, Mark A. Roglán Director of the Custard Institute for Spanish Art and Culture, Meadows Museum, and Agnieszka Anna Ficek, Custard Institute Postdoctoral Fellow, Meadows Museum. They’ll talk about the Meadows’ current exhibition, The Legacy of Vesuvius: Bourbon Discoveries on the Bay of Naples, which looks at how the first modern, organized excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum by the 18th-century Bourbon kings influenced the fine and decorative arts of their time. Comprised of nearly 50 objects, the exhibition’s unique combination of Roman archaeological material from the excavations at Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other sites, mingled with 18th-century paintings, porcelain, and prints, will provide an exciting introduction to the archaeological treasures of ancient Rome and their formative influence on 18th-century artistic production.
The program is free with regular museum admission: $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 65 and over, $4 for non-SMU students, free for members, free for youth under 18*
*Free museum admission for youth 18 and under is made possible by a grant from Fichtenbaum Charitable Trust, Bank of America, N.A., Co-Trustee.
