Wye Oak Lecture Series—Wampum: The Convergence of Art, Culture, History and Diplomacy
Wampum is a significant cultural resource for the Indigenous communities of eastern North America, long before European contact. Join Mario Harley, an artist and tribal leader of the Piscataway Conoy Nation, as he explores the historical role of Wampum and its uses as captured in colonial records and Indigenous oral histories within Maryland. Harley will illuminate Wampum beads from MCHC’s collection, as well as share displays of Wampum belts given to and created by his ancestors that are used to educate today.
Doors open at 5:30 pm. Lecture begins at 6 pm. Light reception to follow.
