Edenton and the Albemarle Sound
SOJOURN
March 2028
Tucked away from the Chesapeake Bay, some 80 miles inland along the Albemarle Sound, awaits enchanting Edenton, NC. Seated at the edge of a bay near the confluence of the Chowan and Roanoke rivers, this Colonial-era capital city teems with as much history, art, and architecture as it does Southern coastal charm. Established in 1712, Edenton grew to become the second largest port city in the state, with strong ties to Boston, the West Indies, and England. The town’s preservation community is passionate and active, and participants have the chance to see recent projects at the Cupola House and Hayes. Amidst Edenton’s 18th-century hustle and bustle were people whose stories history often overlooks, including women who organized as political activists, a formerly enslaved woman turned revolutionary writer, and African American watermen facilitating the Maritime Underground Railroad. Join us as we explore one of the nation’s most charming waterfront towns, offering an abundance of historical landmarks, local delicacies, and rich cultural experiences.
