Oaxaca
SOJOURN
November and December 2027
A shimmering mosaic of culture, craftsmanship, and culinary delights awaits on a Sojourn to Oaxaca, Mexico, where the Eastern and Southern Sierra Madre mountain ranges merge. With a name derived from the Aztec language, easygoing and vibrant Oaxaca (pronounced “waa-haa-kuh”) offers the best of southern Mexican charm. Its mountainous terrain has shaped life here since 8,000 BCE—a population of nearly 70% Indigenous peoples live in thousands of villages dotted across its hills and valleys. This insulation has cultivated a rich assortment of artisanal culture and heritage, including the handwoven wool rugs of Teotitlán del Valle, the burnished black clay pottery of San Bartolo Coyotepec, the fanciful alebrijes of San Martín Tilcajete, and the green-glazed ceramics of Santa María Atzompa. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic center of Oaxaca is home to the spectacular Teatro Macedonio Alcalá and lies within easy reach of the mineral springs and petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua. Together, we go beyond the postcard to encounter the living traditions that define this region. Local scholars and curators offer context, connoisseurship, and candid conversation that deepen our understanding of Oaxaca’s layered past and dynamic present. At the table, we savor why Oaxaca is widely regarded as Mexico’s culinary capital. Throughout, we will enjoy privileged access, thoughtful pacing, and the camaraderie of fellow travelers who share a passion for material culture, architecture, and living craft traditions. Join us in Oaxaca, where we engage, learn, taste, and discover together a place where heritage lives vibrantly every day.
