FALL SYMPOSIUM

September 2028

Our Fall Symposium is set in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley of western Virginia. Against an unparalleled backdrop of autumnal splendor awaits a rich legacy of craftsmanship in early America for us to explore. Framed by the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, this fertile region became a crossroads of cultures in the 18th century, shaped by German, Scots-Irish, and English settlers. The material worlds they left behind continue to color the area, from painted furniture and fraktur to stone farmsteads and refined Neoclassical interiors. Guided by our friends and experts, we explore beautifully preserved homes and thoughtfully curated museums that showcase the Valley’s distinctive character. Along the way, we discover how local artisans adapted European forms and techniques to frontier conditions, creating a unique regional aesthetic rooted in both necessity and artistry. The Shenandoah Valley offers a deeply textured sense of place, where history is not only preserved but vividly experienced. We hope you will join us as we encounter the enduring beauty of this place in an unforgettable journey through Virginia’s past.
