Newcomb Pottery Exhibition Virtual Tour
Virtual Tour
Recorded Summer 2025
Register today for a pay-what-you-wish Virtual Tour of The Moss Mystique: Southern Women and Newcomb Pottery, an enchanting exhibition on view at Telfair Museums in Savannah, GA, until September 7, 2025. Elyse Gerstenecker, Curator of Decorative Arts at Telfair, guides us on a journey filled with Spanish moss, cypress swamps, and dangling crescent moons as she tells the story of the Newcomb College Pottery and its contributions to the visual regional identity of the American South. While male potters threw vessels, the women of Newcomb College decorated them with carefully curated imagery of local, and sometimes invasive, flora and fauna. They executed their designs in an ever-evolving array of styles and techniques intended to evoke, if not create, romantic visions of the South. Not to be missed this project represents the culmination of more than a decade of Elyse’s work, funded in part by the Decorative Arts Trust through research and exhibition grants.
