Our upcoming Virtual Dialogue features Sarah Grandin, PhD, Clark-Getty Paper Project Curatorial Fellow at the Clark Art Institute, presenting “Trees, Orphans, and the Forgotten Figures of Savonnerie Carpet Manufacturing (1662-1688).”
Sarah will discuss the marshaling and measurement of trees and laborers in the manufacture of 93 giant Savonnerie carpets for the Louvre’s Grande Galerie. To make carpets of unprecedented size, Louis XIV’s administration had to source exceptionally large fir trees for jumbo looms and renegotiate contracts with its workshops, which conscripted dozens of orphans. The carpets were supposed to embody the state’s command of a rich territory and regimented citizenry. Looking at the visual logic of archival sources related to the carpets, Sarah sheds light on how nature and manpower were managed in new ways in France at the end of the 17th century. Sarah received a Research Grant from the Trust in 2016 while pursuing dissertation research at Harvard.
After her lecture, Sarah will be joined in conversation with Elizabeth Cleland, Curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The program will close with an audience Q&A.
The Decorative Arts Trust hosts monthly virtual dialogues that feature scholars sharing and discussing their exciting new research with experts in the field. The hour-long Zoom program includes a lecture, scholar-to-scholar conversation, and Q&A with the program participants.
