STUDY TRIP ABROAD
June 2028
Join the Decorative Arts Trust for a momentous birthday bash celebrating renowned architect Robert Adam. From his childhood on the Scottish coast under the watchful instruction of father and famed builder William Adam, to a comprehensive four-year-long tour of the best art and architecture across the United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, and Croatia, we enjoy the fruits of Adam’s upbringing, education, and exploration. His triumphant London architectural practice cannot be overestimated in its lasting imprint on British design. His legacy is distinguished by harmonious proportions and unified interiors, where walls, ceilings, furnishings, and decorative themes form a cohesive whole. Delicate plasterwork, careful carvings, Classical motifs, and integrated furniture reflect Adam’s innovative approach to decorative arts, drawing on ancient Roman models while collaborating with the best artisans of his era. The tercentenary of this celebrated architect and designer calls for our own Grand Tour: a journey from metropolitan London townhouses to the great estates of Yorkshire and Derbyshire, exploring how Adam’s work expressed the aspirations of a rising elite in an ever more interconnected world.
