Scattered and Fugitive Things: On the History and Future of Black Collections
Black collectors of the early 20th century created the first enduring set of African American archives when the very idea of Black history aroused doubt, producing collections that have benefited generations of scholars and readers. What did these archives mean at the time of their founding? And what do they teach us today, when Black history is again under siege? Dr. Laura E. Helton, associate professor of English and history at the University of Delaware, will discuss these topics from her recent book, Scattered and Fugitive Things.
