Long Island
SOJOURN
November 2028
A sunlit Sojourn to Long Island’s Gold Coast awaits you this winter. Join the Trust as we explore one of America’s most storied shorelines, stacked with deep history, grand Gilded Age mansions, formal gardens, and seaside retreats. This strip of the North Shore has long inspired artists, collectors, and architects, all drawn to its bright scenery and proximity to New York City. Beginning in the early 1890s and slowing with the approach of the Great Depression, over 500 lavish private estates were built in a frenzy, concentrated in an area of just 70 square miles. This playground of wealth and eccentricity leaves us with architectural confections in a dazzling array of styles to include English Tudor, French Chateau, Shingle, Georgian, Gothic, Mediterranean, and more. Guided by experts, we explore these grand mansions, listening for the echoes of their European predecessors, as well as refined 20th-century houses that helped define American Modernism. Stepping back in time, Long Island’s 17th and 18th century cultural landscape reflects the region’s early Dutch and English settlements, still visible in the homesteads built by the region’s earliest colonial structures. Discover exceptional collections in museums and historic homes, where decorative arts reflect both cosmopolitan taste and regional character.
