Register today for this pay-what-you-wish Virtual Tour of Wood and Water: Furniture on Long Island, 1660–1860. This richly furnished and relentlessly well-researched exhibition from Preservation Long Island is currently on view in Cold Spring Harbor, NY.
Join Steven Baltsas as he walks us through 200 years of design, commerce, and identity on Long Island through the lens of regional furniture making. Beginning in the 1660s amid the transition from Dutch to English supremacy and ending in the 1860s at the eve of the United States’ Civil War, we witness the everpresent influence of land and sea, wood and water, on material life in the region. Steven introduces us to a cast of craftspeople and consumers, illuminating the economic, religious, political, and social forces that shaped their experiences. Join us on this remarkable journey as we discover two centuries of life on Long Island.
Steven is the Peggy N. Gerry Curatorial Fellow at Preservation Long Island, a two-year position sponsored by the Decorative Arts Trust. Wood and Water will be on view through November 22, 2026. It commemorates the 50th anniversary of the exhibition Long Island is My Nation: The Decorative Arts & Craftsmen, 1640-1830, building upon the groundbreaking research of the late Trust Governor Dean F. Failey (1948–2015).
