Join curator Hollis Goodal on a walk-through of Tōgei: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics. Goodall will talk about the exhibition, share details about the collection, and discuss how the concept came to a realization. Tōgei explores Japan’s ceramic tradition and its evolution from functional wares to modern artistic expression.

Japan’s ceramic traditions are among the most revered in the world, shaped over centuries by regional kilns, tea culture, ikebana flower arranging, devotional practices, and a profound respect for material and process. Some of the artists engage directly with functional wares such as food serving bowls, tea bowls, and flower vessels, while others challenge the very notion of utility by exploring ambitious sculptural works. This exhibition highlights technical mastery while illuminating the intellectual and cultural conversations shaping Japanese ceramics today.

Tōgei is on view at AMOCA June 13, 2026 – January 3, 2027.
