The Yale Summer Session Seminar in Art History
The Importance of Material Literacy: Object-Driven Inquiry in a Digital Age
Designed for curious minds of all backgrounds, and led by Edward Cooke, Charles F. Montgomery Professor of American Decorative Arts, this summer’s seminar is a rare, week-long immersion in material literacy.
Blending morning lectures and discussions with guided exploration of Yale’s extraordinary collections and other object-based engagements in the afternoons, the seminar moves beyond visual analysis alone, challenging students to use a full battery of analytical tools (eyes, touch, and embodied experiences) to more fully understand the material world. What can be learned from an object’s interior (its making, materials, and structural logic) before moving outward to its context? How do we understand an object on its own terms?
